The October 2005 earthquake has caused a lot of damage to the social institutions including mosques. Based on the cultural values of the local communities and their perception of the mosques as being centres for solace (especially in times of crises), worship, social and cultural activities, QC has actively participated in the reconstruction of these institutions. In each and every project of the sort, QC makes sure that the community has contributed its own share in terms of resources to promote the sense of ownership after the project has been materialized leaving no room for individual misuse. In the earthquake affected areas, ERRA has been cooperative in this respect making sure that the construction and seismic resistant guidelines have been respected. NOCs have been issued by the respective department.
Over the recent few years, Qatar Charity has constructed and rehabilitated tens of mosques in various parts of the country especially in the rural areas. The majority of these mosques are utilized to provide informal education to children (boys & girls) in the form of what is locally known as "Maktab School".
The implementation of such projects normally undergoes a lengthy process within Qatar Charity. Before endorsing any project of this sort, we make sure to get enough assurances from the local communities as to avoid the following;
The facility should not be used for anti state or anti government activities in any manner; failure of which will make the concerned answerable to the competent authorities.
The facility should not be used to promote any sectarian affiliation;
The mosque should be used for the sole purpose of worship and facilitation of the socio-cultural activities of the local population.
To achieve the above mentioned objectives, we make sure that a committee is formed to take the responsibility of overseeing and managing the operation of the facility.
In the last two years (2007-2008), QC has constructed, through coordination with the local communities, more than 150 mosques in various parts of the country. An estimated number of 100,000 people have benefited from these projects.
Qatar Charity is in a special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations since 1997. In Pakistan, QC is registered with the Economic Affairs Division, Ministry of Economic Affairs & Statistics
